Electrical Panel Upgrades And Installation

Your electrical panel is the backbone of your home’s power system. If it’s undersized, outdated, or struggling to keep up with modern demands, Pacific Coast Generation will upgrade it correctly, with permits and inspections handled start to finish.

You May Have An Outdated Panel

Most Southern California homes were built when the average household used a fraction of the electricity it does today.

A 100-amp panel was enough for the appliances of the 1970s and 80s, but it’s not enough for modern electricity usage.

If you’re tripping breakers regularly, planning to install solar or a battery backup system, adding an EV charger, or finishing a room addition, there’s a good chance your electrical panel needs an upgrade to go along with it. Pacific Coast Generation installs 200-amp service upgrades and full panel replacements for homeowners and businesses across Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties.

We’re a licensed C-10 electrical contractor. Every panel upgrade is permitted, inspected, and performed by our own electricians.

How Much Does An Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost In southern California?

Electrical panel upgrades in Southern California typically range from $2,000 to $4,500 for a standard 200-amp service upgrade. Factors that affect cost:

  • Current panel size and condition (100-amp vs. 60-amp starting point)
  • Whether the service entrance cable also needs replacement
  • Utility coordination requirements (some upgrades require a new meter base)
  • Whether the panel is inside or outside, and how accessible it is
  • Any Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel-specific complications

Federal Tax Credit note:
Electrical panel upgrades that are part of a qualifying home energy improvement project (solar, battery, heat pump, EV charger) may be eligible for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C). Consult your tax advisor.

What's Included In An Electrical Panel Upgrade?

  • Panel assessment: We evaluate your current panel, service entrance, and load to spec the correct replacement.
  • 200-amp service upgrade: We install a new 200-amp main breaker panel with sufficient breaker slots for current and future loads.
  • Utility coordination: We coordinate the meter pull and reconnection with SCE or SDG&E as required.
  • Permit and inspection: Every panel upgrade in California requires a permit. We pull it, schedule the inspection, and get sign-off.
  • Breaker reconnection: All existing circuits are reconnected and labeled. You’ll have a clean, organized panel with room to grow.
  • Solar / EV / battery readiness: If you’re adding any of these services, we spec the new panel to accommodate them from day one.

Signs You Need An Electrical Panel Upgrade

You might need a panel upgrade if:

  • Breakers trip frequently, especially when running multiple appliances at once
  • You’re planning to install solar panels, a battery backup system, or an EV charger
  • Your home still has a 60-amp or 100-amp service panel
  • You’re adding a room, ADU, garage conversion, or other significant addition
  • You have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. These have known safety concerns, often flagged by inspectors
  • Your home is 30+ years old and has never had an electrical service upgrade
  • The lights dim when large appliances start up
  • You smell burning near your panel or notice discoloration on breakers

If you’re not sure whether your panel needs attention, we can do a site assessment to give you a definitive answer.

Do You Have The Following Panels?

Federal Pacific And Zinsco Panels

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco panels are found in many older Southern California homes, and both have well-documented safety concerns. Breakers in these panels can fail to trip during an overload or short circuit, creating a fire risk. Home inspectors commonly flag these panels during property sales. Insurance companies increasingly refuse to cover homes with them or charge significantly higher premiums. If your home has one of these panels, replacement might be necessary. We replace Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels throughout our service area. Contact us to schedule an assessment.

HOW THE INSTALLATION PROCESS WORKS

How The Panel Upgrade Process Works

STEP 1

Free Assessment

We assess your current panel, service entrance, and electrical load. If an upgrade is needed, we explain why and quote the full scope, including labor, materials, permit, and utility coordination.

STEP 2

Permit

We submit the permit application to your local building department and coordinate the required utility disconnect with SCE or SDG&E.

STEP 3

Installation

We pull the meter, remove the old panel, install the new 200-amp panel, reconnect all circuits, label the breaker directory, and restore power. Most panel upgrades are completed in a single day. Power will be off for approximately 4-8 hours during the work.

STEP 4

Inspection and Completion

We schedule and pass the final inspection with your local AHJ. Your permit is closed, your panel is on record, and you have documentation for your home file.

You don’t always need a panel upgrade for solar installation, but it is often the case. We assess your panel as part of every solar consultation. If your current panel doesn’t have sufficient capacity or breaker space for the solar inverter and associated equipment, an upgrade will be recommended before installation begins.

Yes. Power will be off for approximately 4-8 hours on installation day while the old panel is removed, the new panel is installed, and circuits are reconnected. We schedule work to minimize disruption and keep you informed of the timeline throughout the day.
